Happy Chinese New Year – a Lucky and Mighty Year of the Tiger!
Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar Year, is a two-week festival that marks the first day of a new year on a lunar calendar. It falls on a different date with the new moon, sometime between January 21st and February 20th. This year, it falls on February 1st. Unlike most calendars that count years in an infinite sequence, the Chinese calendar repeats every 60 years with five cycles of 12-year intervals. For each year, there is an animal sign: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. 2022 is the Year of the Black Water Tiger, enormously significant as it occurs once every 60 years.
Celebrated by more than 20% of the world's population, Chinese New Year, for those who celebrate, is the most important holiday of the year. It's a celebration to throw out the old year and bring forth the luck and prosperity of the new one. It's a time of celebration to welcome the new year with a smile and let the new year's fortune and happiness continue. Families and friends celebrate in many different ways. Chinese New Year parades feature colorful costumes, floats, firecrackers, and other attractions, street fairs, various dances including lion and dragon dances, Chinatown fun runs or walks, as well as balls and pageants.
With all of the festivities and celebrations, one particular element about this holiday that is widely iconic are the gifting and sending of the red envelopes. Red symbolizes luck and good fortune in Chinese culture. The red envelopes, lai see, in Cantonese and hongbao in Mandarin.
